It’s an easy 4.5 out 5 Rubber Chickens from me.Art of rally has been out for over a year at this point, and though it wasn’t exactly the most high profile release when it came out, Funskeletor Labs’ rally racer has amassed quite the fanbase. This game was a breath of fresh driving air, managing to focus down on being a challenging but fun racing game - whilst also gracing the eyeballs with wonderful visuals. Oh, and the little bean-like audience that litters the track always gave me a chuckle, though I wish they made some sort of noise as I narrowly avoided them.

Plus the camera’s perspective also helps to paint the entire world as a miniature, making it all feel so lovely and wholesome whilst you dramatically flail off the course. The simplified design and calming colour pallet is such a welcomed change in a genre that generally aims for realism. I dunno what the ‘of’ part is all about but this game is art.

Despite it’s simplistic visual exterior, I was constantly surprised just how much of a true Rally experience for novice and experienced drivers alike, this truly is.īut of course, Rally is just one third of this game title. Sticking your butt out around corners, slamming on the handbrake at the last minute. Tired of one car, not to worry - Art of Rally drops a consistent feed of new cars and liveries throughout the career to keep you customising and learning.Īnd you’ll be learning up until the final checkered flag, does Rally even have checkered flags? Anyway, as the cars are based in real world handling - once you have gotten a handle, you can really push them. From the sleek tame design of the La Montaine, to the far too powerful DAS EIBENHAMMER - there’s a range of vehicles for all driving styles, each with their own pros and cons, even for my beloved Mini. Now, whilst I am a simple man that will pick his car and hold on tight, no matter how ill-suited it is! There is a whole variety of vehicles on offer here. There’s also a photo mode, which just added an extra 7 hours to my gameplay. It’s a nice addition that gives greater freedom to roam and soak up the game's beauty than the tight tracks can ever allow. Each boasting collectibles to snatch up and. Outside of career mode there’s also timed online events to beat, leaderboards to conquer and multiple open worlds to blast across. If you like a hard Rally, you’ll strive to do your best - and if you just want to fling a car around a track, you can do that too. But not to worry, whilst stages can be harsh and long - you won’t need to win or hit a certain place to progress onwards and unlock further tracks. The game also doesn’t give you any rankings whilst racing, so you’ll need to wait until you’ve set your time to see where you’ve placed. I get it, just take it a little slower Will.

I get it’s a little bit of spice to the challenge, but if you’re not going to give me a map - like a real Rally, give me a co driver to help me navigate and warn me of hairpin turns. With just a timer to keep you company, and no mini-map in sight - you’ll need to keep track of the oncoming corners and perils all on your own, whilst also just generally keeping control of your car… A task I often failed at. As is Stage Rally custom, you'll be setting your time solo on the track - which is a shame for a cheeky soul like me who usually uses other cars to break into corners.
There's a wide variety of tracks, offering up plenty of different locations, weather and terrain types. Taking us through Rally's golden era, you'll play stages separated into years - each race inspired by real world events from the time. Yeah, it’s a wild choice beginning - but a fun jumping off point for the game’s career mode. To my knowledge, they are never seen again. Amongst other things, it tells you that you’re to become ‘The Master of Rally’. Driving along the countryside, you’re greeted by an idol that emerges from the ground.
